Oddada Preview: All Aboard the Tune-Train
When I was a kid, my grandmother had a bag of wooden shapes and I was completely obsessed with playing with them any time I would visit. I would pour out all of the shapes and use them to create my own special landscapes, creatures, people and things. The only limit was my imagination. Oddada from Developers Sven Ahlgrimm and Mathilde Hoffman is an upcoming music game that, just like my old bag of wooden shapes, encourages the player to use their imagination to create something exciting and new.
In Oddada, you control a tune-train that will collect the music that you create on each level, add it to the back of the train, and bring them all together at the end to create your song. To make music on each level, you’ll have to utilize the landscape and gadgets given to you. For example, in one level you’re presented with a flat, green field of cubes that you can add to using additional green cubes. Each cubes causes the level to move and change, creating different tones of music with each addition. Once you’re happy with the sounds that you’ve created you can add it to your tune-train and move on to the next level.
The current demo for Oddada, available in Steam’s Next Fest, features a variety of intriguing, tactile levels filled with different gadgets for you to try. Each of these gadgets creates its own sound or changes the sound of the level itself to make new sounds. There are no rules. There are no timers. There’s no limit to what you can change and move around in each level.
And that’s the best part. Being able to use your full level of creativity and imagination to create something with no limits is so much fun. Oddada really encourages players to embrace their inner child (or their inner musician!) and just have fun with it. Relax and play around. Groove to the music and just enjoy yourself. And when you’ve filled up your train with your little tunes, you can even add them together on an in-game cassette tape and export the music itself to share with your friends.
Oddada’s Steam page states that each run through of the game has randomized levels and randomized gadgets so when the full game releases, you’ll be able to create loads of unique songs no matter how many times you play. Set to release on Steam in Q3 2024, this little game is the perfect low pressure title for someone looking for an outlet for their creativity or just someone who wants to enjoy a colorful little adventure.
